A 72-year-old man on Wednesday was successfully implanted with a new valve in the heart using a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI Process) procedure at the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI) here.
ACI is part of the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Medical College Hospital, Raipur, the biggest in the state.
Head of Cardiology Department Dr Smit Srivastava said it is for the first time in a medical college that a valve inside a pre-implanted surgical valve has been fixed.
It was a high-risk operation on an elderly patient with hypertension and rheumatic heart disease. But it was successful.
The TAVI Process is used on patients for whom open-heart surgery is not possible or for whom open-heart surgery is risky. The patient is not given anesthesia and does not remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for long, he said.
He said the patient had undergone open heart surgery in 2009. In February 2022, he had chest pain and dizziness. The heart function was only 35 percent.
