DVC Bokaro Thermal's 500 MW capacity power plant is closed since the night of Wednesday due to over filling of ash pond number one and two, which were constructed by DVC near Nuri Nagar within jurisdiction under the power plant.
Sources said that both the ash ponds has accumulated more than its capacity. In such a situation, the embankment of the pond can be damaged at any time.
Plant sources said that three years ago, on 12 September 2019, the embankment of the ash pond had suddenly collapsed due to over filling, due to which the entire BTPS residential colony were seen flooded including, Nishan hut colony, over bridge, the health center located at Phase-2 Kashmir Colony. Mostly DVC employees who were residing in such colony having lost their properties.
As per information provided by locals the DVC has built two ash ponds at Nuri Nagar in BokaroThermal and both have a capacity of one million metric tonnes of ash each.
In the present situation both ponds are filled to the maximum. which is a sign of danger.
In this regard, Bokaro Thermal Plant's Chief Engineer cum Project Head Sushant Shanigrahi said that due to non-availability of a space to throw the ash from the dam, the ash emanating from the plant is getting accumulated in the pond itself. We Can't find a place to throw ash in another place while official are talking with CCL.The Deputy Commissioner of Bokaro has also been apprised of this problem. It is also necessary to generate electricity from Bokaro thermal plant, he said. DVC sources said that about three thousand metric tonnes of ash is generated daily from Bokaro Thermal's A plant with a capacity of 500 MW power generation, in which water is mixed and sent to ash pond through pipes. While project head told that an attempt is being made to throw ash at another place. Solution will come out soon. Presently production of 500 MW of electricity from A plant has been closed.
