The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Monday urged CM Naveen Patnaik to put an end to the inter-State river disputes with the neighbouring States of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh by a meeting of the CMs of the States in question with a mediation of the PM.
SP State president Rabindra Behera requested CM Patnaik to take up the river disputes issue with the PM during his current tour to Delhi.
“It has come out in the media that Hon’ble Prime Minister may discuss the support of BJD for the coming Presidential election. Before extending your support to the NDA nominee proposed by the Prime Minister we request you to urge the Prime Minister to make an end to the Mahanadi Water dispute issue with Chhatisgarh,” said Behera in a letter to Patnaik.
He further said, “Not only Mahanadi issue but also Chhatisgarh is going to construct a dam over IB river which will affect the water need of Sundargarh and Jharsuguda districts. Similarly, we request you to take up Sankha and Koel river water disputes with the Prime Minister as Jharkhand Government is constructing dams over Sankha and Koel which will affect the Brahmani river and the water need of Rourkela Township as well as the districts of Dhenkanal, Angul, Jajpur including Kalinga Nagar Industrial belt and Kendrapada.”
Besides, Behera also requested Patnaik to discuss with the PM about the Bansadhara and Nagabali water dispute with AP.
