Engineering is said to be one of the highly regarded and popular courses among students globally because of its career and scope opportunities. Every year in India, lakhs of students take admission in various engineering colleges. Candidates need to choose the right engineering colleges as well as the specialization to make a good career in engineering. Admission to the top Engineering colleges in India is based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) which is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). Candidates should qualify for JEE Main/ JEE Advanced to get admission into engineering institutes like IITs, IIITs, NITs, and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs).

In India, every year the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) releases the National Institutional Ranking Framework’s ranking of top engineering colleges. Highlights of Admission Criteria in Top Engineering Colleges in India

The highlights of the admission process to the Top Engineering Colleges in India are given in the below points:

  • Candidates must have passed their higher secondary examination with a minimum of 75% of marks from a recognized Board such as State Board, CBSE, etc. for Top Engineering Colleges in India admissions.
  • Register and qualify for the JEE Main and Advanced Entrance Exam.
  • Requires compulsory rank in the JEE Advanced Entrance Exam.
  • Upon Result Declaration in 10+2, All India Rank, candidates can register for Joint Seat Allocation Process.

JEE comprises two stages: JEE Main and JEE Advanced Exam. JEE Main and JEE Advanced are some of the widely toughest entrance exams accepted by both state and national colleges in India. JEE Main is the preliminary stage in which around 10 to 12 lakh of aspirants every year appear for the exam. In a year, JEE Main exam is conducted four times i.e., From February to May.

JEE Advanced: Candidates who qualify for the JEE Mains entrance exam are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced exam. It is the final stage of the exam before admission. Every year, around 1.5 to 1.7 lakh aspirants appear for the JEE Advanced exam after clearing JEE Mains, but only 50 to 60 thousand aspirants are cleared for the exam. Candidates who clear JEE Mains, as well as JEE Advanced, are eligible to take admission in IITs, whereas the candidates can qualify only for the preliminary stage i.e., JEE Mains are eligible to take admission into NITs.

VIT Vellore, BITS Pilani, etc are the top private engineering colleges that offer admissions every year into engineering courses by conducting their entrance exam. Different engineering colleges organize different admission processes for candidates. To get admission in top engineering institutes like IITs, candidates need to qualify for JEE Advanced and to get admission in any national college, candidates should qualify for JEE Mains.

Some colleges conduct their own entrance exams to carry out the admission process. In some colleges, some of the seats are already reserved for those candidates who took the state-level entrance examination, while other seats are reserved for those students who appeared for the national-level entrance examination. Some states accept admission based on marks obtained in the higher secondary examination. They do not organize any common entrance examinations. This process of admission is known as Centralized admission.

IIT Madras

IIT Madras is one of the top engineering colleges in India and has been ranked 1st position by NIRF 2021. The admission process of IIT Madras for the engineering courses is based on the JEE Advanced entrance exam followed by a counseling process. The selection of candidates is done by various authorities through the national-level tests. The process of centralized counseling is regulated and managed by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) on which the aspirants are allotted seats. The process of admission is based on the entrance exam and on eligibility criteria. The whole process of admission is done through online mode. To apply for admission to IIT Madras, candidates need to fulfill the basic eligibility criteria.

IIT Delhi

Another top engineering college in India is IIT Delhi. Admission to various courses in IIT Delhi is done through the entrance exam. Candidates are selected on the basis of a national-level exam. For the admission process, candidates need to visit the official portal of their own national-level entrance exam conducting authority. Aspirants have to appear and qualify for JEE Advanced for admission in IIT Delhi. Candidates who qualified for Advanced need to register on the official portal of JoSAA for participating in the counseling process. Candidates need to participate in the JoSAA counseling to confirm their admission to IIT Delhi.

IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay admission process is based on the JEE Advanced and on the basis of marks obtained in the higher secondary examination. To get admission to IIT Bombay, candidates require a good ranking in the JEE Advanced entrance examination. On the basis of the higher secondary results, All India Rank in the entrance exam, candidates are enrolled for the Joint Seat Allocation process.

IIT Kanpur

IIT Kanpur admissions to the engineering courses will be done on the basis of the criteria of JEE entrance exam. Once the entrance exam is cleared, the candidates who are qualified must appear for the process of counseling conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

IIT Roorkee: The admission process in IIT Roorkee varies from course to course. The candidates appear for the entrance test that is required for each course and have to fulfill all the eligibility criteria to take admission for IIT Roorkee. IIT Roorkee admission to the B.Tech courses are done through the JEE Advanced entrance exam.
