Days after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Revdi’ jibe on political parties offering freebees, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday promised a host of sops, including free electricity to farmers and a limited power bills to general consumers on the lines of AAP led Delhi and Punjab Governments, while addressing a “Parivartan Sankalp Rally” at Ahmedabad.
Simultaneously, the party also announced measures for its mega 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' from Wednesday stating its objective is to ensure that the concerns and demands of the people reach Delhi.
A day after a huge response from the Mehangai Par Halla Bol rally in national Capital, Rahul announced for a farm loan waiver up to Rs 3 lakh to farmers in Gujarat, LPG cylinder at Rs 500 instead of Rs 1,000 besides free electricity to agriculturists if his party forms a government in the state where elections are due later this year.
AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal who is trying to make major inroads in the coastal State after making a benchmark in Punjab recently, too had announced several sops and promised freebies if it comes to power in Gujarat.
Rahul made a host of promises including the creation of 10 lakh new jobs, building 3,000 English medium schools, free education for girls, and a subsidy of Rs 5 per litre to milk producers. He also accused the BJP government in Gujarat of insulting the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who he said was the voice of farmers in the country.
Rahul Gandhi asserted Congress will focus on generating employment in the BJP-ruled Gujarat and will provide jobs to 10 lakh youth. Targeting the ruling BJP, he said it built the world's tallest statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat, while on the other hand, it insulted him by working against those for whom Patel lived and died.
Rahul Gandhi said that Congress will grant a loan waiver to farmers as it had done in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Karnataka. "Wherever we came to power, we said our first job will be to do what Sardar Patel would have done. And here, too, we will waive the loan of Rs 3 lakh (of farmers)," he said.
"We will open 3,000 English medium schools and provide free education to girls. Thousands of schools were shut down by the BJP government. They built the statue of Sardar Patel and on the other hand, shut down thousands of schools," the former Congress president said.
Earlier in the day, Congress asserted that its 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' is not a 'Mann Ki Baat' in any manner, but its objective is to ensure that the concerns and demands of the people reach Delhi. It also released the anthem of the Yatra, that will be launched from Kanyakumari from September 7 with Rahul Gandhi along with over 100 'Bharat Yatris' embarking on a 3,570 km metres journey. The party has billed the Yatra as an unprecedented mass contact programme ever undertaken in Independent India.
