Undertrial prisoner dies of Covid-19

A 43-year-old Covid-19 positive undertrial prisoner of the Delhi Prions department died on Tuesday in a hospital in western part of the national Capital.

According to the prison officials, under trial prisoner Mohammad Anish, inmate of central jail number 4, Tihar, was detected Covid-19 positive on Monday. He was having mild symptoms and was shifted to central jail hospital, CJ-3. “On Tuesday morning, his condition deteriorated and he was referred to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital in emergency. Later, he died in the hospital in the afternoon,” said Sandeep Goel, the Director General (DG) of prison.

Anish had been lodged in jail since December 17, 2019 in a case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the officials said. According to data shared by the prisons department, 267 fresh cases of coronavirus have been reported among the inmates since March 2021. Of them, 22 have recovered and there are 245 active cases. Similarly, 92 staff members have tested positive for the virus since March 2021.

One has recovered and 91 active cases are still there, the data said. The is the third death since last year. Two COVID-19 positive inmates of Mandoli Jail died on June 15 and July 4, 2020. Both were senior citizens.
