Himadri Emporium receives good response in new location

Thursday, 30 September 2021 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Uttarakhand Handloom and Handicraft Development Council (UHHDC) recently opened its Himadri Emporium on its premises in Patelnagar. The emporium offers a range of handicrafts and other products from various parts of Uttarakhand. Traditional crafts and designs have been imbibed in modern goods with the support of various designers from Uttarakhand to make sure the products suit the needs and demands of the market.

All major handicrafts offered here are made by reviving traditional crafts such as Aipan, copper crart of the Tamtas, ringal weaving and others.  Products here include bamboo and ringal home decor, Moonj grass home and kitchen accessories, hand crafted copperware, natural fibre textile, woolen handloom, Aipan handpainting and products. All products are locally sourced and manufactured. Chief ministers had also purchased Aipan souvenirs from Himadri for the Prime Minister and various Union ministers.

Aipan design manager Mamta Joshi said the main objective of Himadri is to provide sustainable livelihoods to the local artisans which was not previously possible as the products didn’t accrue the consistent demand throughout the year. The problem is solved now as the products are now customised; for example, the traditional knitters who used to be devoid of work in summers are now occupied throughout the year as they now also manufacture diverse products such as toys and handicrafts. Product designer Abhiruchi Chandel said she partnered with more than 30 women now who manufacture Ringal products. The range of products are affordable. Rashmi Bahuguna; store and stock manager said the store has been getting a good response thanks to its new location and range of products.
