The Chhattisgarh government is one of the sponsors of the India pavilion at the London Design Biennale and the state's forest policy is among the innovative ideas showcased at the world's largest design exhibition.
The third edition of the Biennale is being held from June 1 to 27 at Somerset House in London with Es Devlin as Artistic Director. Twentytwo countries, including Canada, Hong Kong, India and Israel, are taking part.
Through their designs, the participants will try to answer Es Devlin's question: ‘How can current problems be solved through design?’
The India Pavilion is curated by renowned architect Nisha Mathew Ghosh and she is placing India's new ecological agenda on the world stage.
The exhibition, ‘Small is beautiful: A Billion stories’, is a glimpse into India’s design ideologues to present solutions to the problems of the ecosystem and the climate crisis with new age designs.
The Chhattisgarh Forest Policy, due to its multi-dimensional design and vision, has been chosen as the main attraction by Ghosh.
The policy, through the private sector, farmers, village panchayats and the government, promotes commercial plantations of timber so that the industrial, furniture and firewood needs of the state are met and India's dependence on timber import is reduced.
