The doctors of Bokaro General Hospital (BGH) of SAIL BSL have created history by successfully operating on the spinal cord of 65-year-old old woman Tirathy Devi with balloon kyphoplasty method. Under the guidance of CMO (Medical and Health Services) Dr. Pankaj Sharma and led by ACMO (Medical and Health Services) and HOD of Neurosurgery, Dr. Anand Kumar, ACMO (Medical and Health Services) having ACMO (Medical and Health Services) Dr. Gautam Saha, ACMO (Medical and Health Services) Dr. Pradeep Kumar, DCMO (Medical and Health Services) Dr. Ajay Kumar, DCMO Dr. Uma Shankar Ram, This complex operation was carried out with the help of Medical Officer Dr. Mohit Kumar and other doctors and OT personnel.
BGH is the only hospital in Jharkhand where for the first time successful operation of spinal cord with balloon kyphoplasty method has been done. In balloon kyphoplasty method, bone cement is filled in the broken spinal cord by ballooning, due to which the suppressed bone comes to its old shape and place. In this method, the patient is operated without much incision with the help of state-of-the-art equipment like fluoroscopic imaging.
Tirathy Devi is the wife of Dhaneshwar Mallah, ex-employee of Bokaro Steel Plant who had fallen in the bathroom in the month of September due to which her spinal cord was fractured and she was unable to walk and was groaning in unbearable pain. During the investigation at BGH, Dr. Anand found that Tirathy Devi has not one but two fractures in her spine. Dr. Anand Kumar, in consultation with Dr. Pankaj Sharma, accepted the challenge of performing the operation with the complex balloon kyphoplasty method in view of the patient’s suffering. Mrs. Tirathy Devi is completely healthy after the operation and is able to walk. In the course of the conversation, Dr. Anand Kumar said that patients go to hospitals outside Bokaro for this type of operation, whereas now this facility is available in Bokaro General Hospital and they can take advantage of it.
