Shia Waqf Board not to charge rents for three months

Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Waqf Board announced to waive three months’ rent of tenants of its properties due to the lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Shia Waqf Board Chairman Waseem Rizvi said in Lucknow on Monday that the rent for three months from March 1 had been waived by the Board.

He said that the chief executive officer of the Board had been directed to inform mutawallis (caretakers) of waqf properties that no rent be charged from tenants for three months.

Rizvi said the all major nations were grappling to cope with the coronavirus pandemic and the Central and UP governments were doing everything possible to help the poor and vulnerable sections.

The UP government had earlier announced to waive rent for one month.

Lucknow District Magistrate Abhishek Prakash also issued orders directing landlords to not realise rent for one month from tenants.

The order said that landlords could not force tenants to pay rent of one month and if any landlord was found violating the order, he/she would face legal action. He also directed owners of commercial properties to not ask for one month’s rent from their tenants.
