A joint initiative of the Chhattisgarh Woman Child Welfare and Development Department (WCD) and Chhattisgarh Police has successfully aborted 469 child marriages in the state from April 1, 2019 to May 2020.
According to government records, in 2020, between January and May, the highest number cases of child marriages were reported from Balodabazar district. Of 78 cases, timely action foiled 77 child marriages.
According to the records, Chhattisgarh is among the states where child marriages are rampant.
Director Divya Umesh Mishra of WCD said: “Child marriage is a social evil and exists in Indian society. It not only spoils the career of the underage married couple but destroys their lives. To stop this socio-evil, we continuously run awareness programmes and carry out joint raids”.
