Puducherry has recorded 83 new COVID-19 cases, taking the infection tally in the Union Territory to 34,193, Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao said on Sunday.
The death toll in the UT rose to 588 with two more people succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours, he told reporters in a video conference.
While the Puducherry region accounted for 54 fresh cases, Karaikal added 13, Yanam seven while Mahe had nine new infections, the minister said.
A total of 2,878 samples were tested for COVID-19, Rao said, adding that the caseload stood at 34,193 (after transfer of two cases to Tamil Nadu).
There are 3,804 active cases, while 29,801 patients have recovered from the infection.
Rao said the two people who succumbed to the virus had diabetes and COVID pneumonia.
The minister further said that 187 patients were discharged from hospitals during the last 24 hours.
The fatality and recovery rates are 1.72 per cent and 87.16 per cent, respectively.
The health minister said 2.89 lakh samples were tested for COVID-19 so far and 2.51 lakh samples tested negative. The result of the examination of the remaining samples was awaited.
