Brainwaves to track Performance in Crisis

The researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Madras have shown that electroencephalogram (EEG) can be used to measure brainwaves in workers, to assess their mental sharpness, especially during times of crisis. EEG involves placing sensors on the scalp of the subject and measuring brain wave activity.

Such measurements will help in assessing the capability of the worker to respond to an emergency in real-time, which, in turn, could prevent accidents and mishaps on a factory floor.

Talking about the need for this research, Professor Rajagopalan Srinivasan, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras, said: “Human errors are the cause of nearly 70 per cent of industrial accidents, world over. Errors, planning or execution stage, depend not only on the skill of the worker but also on his mental state and sharpness.

“Anybody’s performance will become error-prone if there is a mismatch between the demands of the task which the person is responsible and their ability at that moment to handle it. Such a mismatch leads to high cognitive workload in human operators, often a precursor to poor performance.”

learn Coding free of cost

The Coding Blocks has launched Coding Blocks Junior channel to provide free coding courses in Visual programming (Scratch/Code.ORG), Python, Web development and Robotics to school students across India and abroad. It has superb mentors, well-researched content and all are certificate programmes.

The idea was a dream of its founder, Manmohan Gupta, an IIT Delhi alumni who believes that coding should be imparted to all students at the school level. Gupta, founder Coding Blocks said: “It is our vision and dream that has prompted us to start this free venture. The current curriculum is not enough to prepare our students for a dynamic market. Coding is a boon for students as it will teach them logical thinking and problem solving from an early stage. We hope students will utilise this oppportunity.”
