The United Nations has commended the Odisha Government for evacuating 1.2 million people well before Cyclonic Fani hit the State’s coast.
United Nations Resident Coordinator Yashmin Ali Haque sent a letter to Chief Secretary AP Padhi on Wednesday lauding the efforts of the State Government in this regard.
The UN authorities have expressed condolences for death of people and solidarity with the affected people.
“The Odisha Administration’s preparedness and pace of response have been critical in saving lives,” the letter read.
The UN Resident Coordinator has informed that the United Nations in India stands ready to offer assistance and support to the State Government in post-disaster response, assessment making and recovery planning.
A UN team is closely coordinating with the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) and the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) to extend support across the sectors.
UNICEF Odisha chief Monika Nielsen has been given the charge of maintaining coordination with the State Government.
