Plans are afoot to use the Kanwad Patri marg for electricity production using solar panels. With this plant 19 mega watts electricity can be generated to supply to the national grid.
The plan has been proposed by irrigation department and sent to the state government for approval.A project proposal worth Rs 76 crore has been sent to the state government for installation of solar panel plant along the Ganga canal Patri Marg. Many reputed companies have been contacted for the same and given the offer.
The interested companies would make their own investment and after getting green signal from the State Government for this pilot project, 19 megawatts electricity will be generated. The irrigation department has a stretch of land available along the 60 kilometre long Gangnahar Patri Marg.
If the pilot project gets approval then a bigger solar power plant worth hundred megawatts capacity shall be designed, say the officials.
Speaking to this correspondent, the executive engineer of irrigation department, Haridwar, RK Tiwari said, "Solar energy panels are proposed to be installed along the land available along the 60 kilometre Gangnahar stretch. In the first phase, a five kilometre stretch from Jhotwara Bridge, Jwalapur to Bahadrabad has been proposed for the pilot project."
Notably a similar solar project along Sabarmati river front at Ahmedabad in Gujarat has been made with which 10 megawatts of electricity is being produced. A delegation of engineers from Irrigation Department of Haridwar had gone to Gujarat to to see the working of the plant recently.
