The Delhi Cabinet on Friday accorded the final administrative approval and revised expenditure sanction for construction of a flyover and underpass on Outer Ring Road from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to National Highway (NH)-8 at a cost of Rs 364.87 crore.
The project will be constructed in two parts. In the first part a Flyover will be constructed on the portal structure linking the existing Munirka flyover in the East to the point beyond Army RR hospital on the
West of Outer Ring Road. An underpass from Junction point of BH marg to till Inner Ring Road will be constructed in the part B.
“PWD constructed three flyovers on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) between 2007 to 2010 during the Common Wealth Games in order to decongest traffic on Africa Avenue and intersections near IIT over the Vivekananda Marg, Nelson Mandela Marg and Kamakoti Marg intersections at Munirka. One way flyover over the Rao Tula Ram (RTR) and Benito Juarez Marg (BJM) Intersections near Vasant Vihar,” said a PWD official.
During the construction of the flyovers at some of the members from the Vasant Vihar Welfare Association moved to the High Court in October 2009 for redressal of their concerns regarding traffic management on the stretch, after the opening of these flyovers.
The officials added that these flyovers will help to ease the traffic congestion on the Outer Ring Road and improve the East-West Connectivity to the Airport, Dwarka, Gurgaon and NH 8.
Further, the underpass at the BJ Marg under the ring road will provide a facility for a right turn from BJ Marg to the Inner Ring Road thereby opening up the capacity of the under- utilized BJ Marg and easing traffic on the RTR. This will also improve connectivity to Central and North Delhi Areas from the South.
“The revision in the cost is due to increase in cost of shifting of underground miscellaneous utilities and compensatory tree plantation by Rs 51.20 crore,” said the official.
