A stretch of road between Soro and Kupari has been named after Mahatma Gandhi by the State Government.
The road from the Soro UN College up to Kupari via Tudigadia has been renamed following proposal of the district administration. On the occasion of observation of 150th birth anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi, the district administration while sent several proposals to the State Government, one of them was the renaming of the road which was approved, said District Culture Officer Manaswani Rout.
Tudigadia played a major role during the pre-Independence era. Several freedom fighters fought against the British rule in response to the call from Mahatma Gandhi. Three fighters, Kelu Sahu, Makar Lenka and Raghu Behera, attained martyrdom after being killed by the British police.
The renaming would be a true tribute to the freedom fighters who laid their lives as well as to Mahatma Gandhi, said officials.
In commemoration to their courageous deeds, the district administration installed a plaque near the Tudigadia main market. Local Gandhian followers Upendra Prasad Panigrahi, Upendra Prasad Padhi, Bhakar Panigrahi and Sarbeswar Das were present.
