Uttar Pradesh power employees will go on a day-long strike on January 8 in protest against the privation policy of the Centre and various state government and other regressive amendments in Indian Electricity Act, 2003.
The call for the strike has been given on a national level.
Power Employees Joint Action Committee convenor Shailendra Dubey said here on Wednesday that the notice for the strike had been given to the Central and the state governments.
He said the power employees had given the call for the day-long strike to press their 11-point charter of demands. He said one of the important demands was the restoration of the state electricity boards as done in Kerala and Himachal Pradesh.
“All amendments made in the Indian Electricity Act, 2003 for facilitating privatisation of power distribution across the country should be withdrawn by the government and all anti-labour laws in four labour codes should also be withdrawn,” Dubey said.
The JAC convenor said the power employees were also demanding rollback of the privatisation of power distribution in Agra and Noida. He said the power employees were grateful to the UP government for issuing an undertaking for the safety of the provident fund money of the power employees, but the government should also issue a gazette notification in this regard.
Dubey said instead of drawing a lesson from the failure of the power sector privatisation policy, the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre was adamant on aggressively pursuing the privatisation policy by amending India Electricity Act, 2003 during the budget session next year.
He said if the bill for amending the Indian Electricity Act was passed by Parliament, it would lead to windfall gains for the private power generation and distribution companies leading to huge burden on the common power consumers due to exorbitant power tariff.
