Potholes & waterlogging expose false claims

Wednesday, 10 July 2019 | PNS | DEHRADUN

With the start of monsoon season in Dehradun tall claims made by the departments concerned are getting exposed on the roads every day.

The initial rains have resulted in the number of new potholes and waterlogging situations in various parts of the city. In order for the district traffic department to maintain smooth traffic and preventing accidents these potholes and waterlogging situations have emerged as major concerns.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nivedita Kukreti said, “These potholes and waterlogging situations have cumulative effect on the flow of traffic which then leads to traffic congestions. We have always been saying that traffic management is not police’s responsibility alone. Different aspects and different departments are involved.

Now, that the monsoon is here the potholes get filled with water which is not only dangerous for two wheelers, but in four wheelers the water gets into engine and again leads to clutch jam and other technical faults.”

Superintendent of Police (traffic) Prakash Chandra Arya said, “We routinely send letters to the departments concerned. The potholes, waterlogging and choking of drains are major factors affecting the traffic management.

While digging for some line that is being laid the department concerned seeks permission from us and we given them a specific time period to do complete such work.”

When asked about the specific areas where they face these problems he said, “On East Canal road there is waterlogging problem, then on Race Course Chowk and at Pacific T-junction we face similar problems. We have already communicated with the department through letters and verbally also.”

It is also worth mentioning here that waterlogging and the fear of potholes make people drive in the middle of the road, because of which the traffic which should pass in two lanes is narrowed to just one lane, which leads to traffic congestion.
