For the first time at Dr B.R. Ambedkar Medical Hospital, a surgery of metro-city level was successfully conducted for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) through aorta bi-iliac bypass surgery and installing ‘y’ shaped graft in the patient.
Briefing on the operation, Dr Krishnakant Sahu, Head of Department, Heart, Chest and Vascular surgeon of Advance Cardio-thoracic Institute, Raipur said, “Aneurysm is a condition of ballooning of Aorta due to weakened aorta walls. It could be due to smoking and use of tobacco products, syphilis, marfan syndrome, hereditary (chances 25%) and cholesterol. The disease occurs mainly among males in the age group of 50-70 years. Males have 9 times higher chances than females.”
Dr Sahu said, “The patient Lincoln Christyan, resident of Sector 1, Bhilai came after undergoing treatment for last four months with a condition that his bowl movement was minimum, kidney has reach near failure.”
As chances of ‘death on table’ was more so consent was taken and finally the patient was operated for more than 5 hours requiring around 8 units of blood. The operation was tough as intestines got stuck to ballooned aorta (15x20 cm size) and chances of bursting were high during surgery, said Dr Sahu.
Dr Sahu said such an operation could have cost Rs 7 to 12 lakhs in a private facility, while the total cost incurred to patient is just around Rs 86,000 as he did not have any medical coverage.
