Mahagathbandhan to announce seat sharing after Holi

Sunday, 17 March 2019 | Saurav Roy | Ranchi

The Congress party and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) have decided to take the final call on Mahagathbandhan’s seat sharing in Jharkhand after Holi, Congress leader RPN Singh said on Saturday.

“There are no rifts between the Mahagathbandhan allies over seat sharing. The final call on seat sharing will be taken unanimously and will be announced after Holi,” said Singh, who along with JMM’s Executive President Hemant Soren, met Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Saturday.

Singh said that the decision will be announced in presence of JMM supremo Shibu Soren in Ranchi. The left parties might become one of the allies if they agree with other parties on seat sharing, he added.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) President Babulal Marandi was also in New Delhi on Saturday. Sources said that he too is likely to meet Gandhi and discuss his party’s role in the Mahagathbandhan.

Party insiders said that the JVM-P, JMM, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress party are still in a quandary over decision on the seat sharing due to more than one interested candidate for many constituencies here. While Congress party projects its State President and former Jamshedpur MP Ajoy Kumar as the most eligible candidate for the Jamshedpur seat, the JMM has reportedly asked for Jamshedpur and Chaibasa seats, party insiders said. Congress party’s Geeta Koda is also eyeing the Chaibasa seat, which has reportedly led to confusion in the grand alliance.

Sources said that the RJD is interested in contesting at least two of the 14 seats in Jharkhand, while JMM wants to field its candidates for at least four seats. JVM-P, on the other hand, is likely to contest one seat.

Riding the Modi wave, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won 12 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats here in 2014. JMM won the remaining two.

In the upcoming polls, the opposition parties have joined hands to defeat the BJP which looked nearly undefeatable in 2014. Inclusion of the Communist Party of India (CPI) to the grand alliance may further change the equation as one of the allies will have to give away their seat to the communist party, sources said.

CPI leader D Raja also met Soren on Friday and urged him to include the CPI in the grand alliance and allot the Hazaribagh parliamentary seat to it.
