The Odisha Government has appointed Justice Ajit Singh as the State’s First Chairperson of the Lokayukta. Justice Singh is a former Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
The State Government had committed in the Supreme Court that the process of appointment of Lokayukta would be completed by March 31 and its office would start functioning from April 8.
The Selection Committee for appointment of the Chairperson and Members of the Lokayukta had held its meeting on December 10, 2018. Accordingly, a Search Committee was formed under chairmanship of Justice Amitava Roy on December 24.
And the Search Committee held its meeting on 8 and 9 January, 2019 and submitted its report to the Chairperson of the Selection Committee. The committee recommended the name for appointment of Chairperson of the Lokayukta. After approval of the Governor, the Government notified the appointment order on March 2.
The new Lokayukta would start functioning as soon as Justice Singh takes charge.
