Cyber criminals on Sunday duped a Bokaro-based ophthalmologist of Rs 1.9 lakh through phishing.
Dr Pradeep Kumar, working at the Railway Hospital Adra Division, fell prey to fraudulent phone calls made by a cyber fraud who claimed to be an agent of Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation. Kumar shared his One Time Password (OTP) with the caller and the amount was debited from his bank account in no time.
“The caller told me that today was the last day for updating details of PF account.
He asked for my personal number and the password sent to it through SMS,” said Kumar.
Dr Kumar filed a complaint with the local police against the caller. The cops have charged the unnamed accused under section 419, 420, 467, 468 and 379 of the Indian Penal Code and various sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
Police said that they were investigating the case, but people should be aware of such fraudulent phone calls and avoid sharing personal details with anybody.
“Any person receiving such calls must avoid sharing his or her personal details and immediately share the phone number of the caller with the police,” said the investigating officer.
