A 46-year-old man serving his sentence in Delhi’s Mandoli prison was thrashed to death by his cellmate. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning and was kept under wraps. Murder of an inmate was known after a First Information Report (FIR) was registered and a magisterial probe has been ordered by the Delhi Government.
The deceased has been identified as Rajeev Khanna, who was lodged in prison last month in case of ‘cheque Bounce’ while the accused has been identified as Vinod Kumar (26), who is lodged in prison on the charges of murder. Police said that duo was lodged in jail number-13 barrack.
According to sources, the incident occurred on Wednesday around 8 am, the duo didn’t come out of their barrack and noises of quarrel were heard by the officials in the prison.
“When the official reached the barrack, they found Rajeev lying in pool of blood. Rajeev was rushed to hospital where he succumbed during the treatment,” said the source.
“During initial investigation, it was revealed that Rajeev was sleeping on his bed when Vinod picked up a piece of tile lying on the ground in prison and hit it on the head of Rajeev,” said an official.
“A case of murder has been registered and following the incident security review was also done by officials. A Metropolitan Magistrate is investigating the case. We have also recovered tile which was used in the commission of crime. Post-mortem reported is awaited,” said the official.
