Youth lynched on suspicion of buffalo theft

Friday, 31 August 2018 | PNS | Lucknow

There seems to be no let-up in hate crimes in the state with another youth being lynched in Bareilly district.

The victim, who had come to his home from Dubai where he worked as a tailor, was lynched on the suspicion that he had stolen a buffalo. The police registered a case and arrested four accused.

According to reports, Shahrukh (20), a native of Bholapur Hadoliya village under Cantonment police station in Bareilly, and three of his friends had gone out on Wednesday night when a group of locals nabbed them, suspecting that they had stolen a buffalo.

While Shahrukh was brutally thrashed by the group, his friends managed to escape from the spot. After they raised an alarm, some more villagers reached the spot and rescued Shahrukh. They admitted the victim to district hospital in a serious condition where he succumbed to his injuries.

The post-mortem report ascribed severe beating as the cause of death, the local police revealed. Both sides have lodged FIRs.

Shahrukh’s brother has filed a complaint against 20-25 unnamed persons and three of his associates. The side which alleged buffalo theft has also lodged a report.

Police said they had arrested four of the accused and efforts were on to nab the remaining miscreants who were absconding.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident reported from Ballia, a contractual driver of the Health department committed suicide after killing his wife and two children.

The incident took place on Wednesday night when lakshmi Shankar (35) strangulated his wife Dimple (29) following some dispute with her and then killed his two daughters Sky (7) and Sona (6) by drowning them in a tub at his house on Belthara road in Ballia.

He later informed the police about his act and reached Turtipur village and committed suicide by jumping into the Ghagra river from the bridge.

Police are investigating the case and making efforts to search the body of lakshmi Shankar.
