Underpass opens for 3-day trial

Tuesday, 01 May 2018 | Parvesh Sharma | Gurugram

Hero Honda Chowk Underpass has been thrown open for the public on a trial basis. Officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said that they want to study the volume of traffic for the next three days. The Hero Honda Chowk underpass has been designed to decongest the junction by creating a passage for commuters travelling between sectors 9, 9A, 10, 10A, 34, Sector 37 Industrial area, Khandsa, Basai village, Pataudi and Jhajjar district.

The NHAI is waiting for approval from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for its launch. The final date of the formal announcement for opening the underpass will be announced soon. NHAI project director Ashok Sharma confirmed, “The underpass will be opened to the commuters soon after the inspection of the NHAI team. The contractor of the project had opened the underpass for the trial run. It will be operational soon.”

With the opening of this major intersection on the Expressway, the Gurugram administration expects the residents of old and new Gurugram to commute easily from one side of the city to another as well.

With the opening of the Hero Honda Chowk underpass, people coming from Old Gurugram will be able to proceed towards Subhash Chowk and Sohna road. Similarly, people coming from Sohna road will be able to reach the Industrial area at Sector 37 and multiple Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) sectors without being stuck in the traffic at the crossing.

Earlier, In July 2016, a heavy downpour had triggered a massive traffic jam at the Hero Honda crossing one of the busiest junctions on the Delhi-Gurugram expressway. labelled as 'Gurujam', the unprecentend waterlogging in the city had brought traffic to a stand still. Haryana Government has ticked off sloth officials and had asked them to expedite the  project.

Madhusudhan Rao, project manager of Valecha Engineering ltd, the contractor of the project, said: “Everything at the underpass has been completed. The lED lights, blinkers have been installed. We're only waiting for NHAI's approval to open it for the public.”

Earlier, the project was delayed due to multiple reasons. Among them was a plot on which a restaurant was coming in the way of construction of service roads. A petrol pump was also hampering the construction of the underpass and service roads. It took some time for the authorities to remove these hurdles, an official said.
