With the Executive Council (EC) of Delhi University (DU) “dropping” the names of five persons who were Delhi Government nominees for the Governing Bodies (GB) of 28 DU colleges funded by it, the “stand-off” between the DU and the Government over the formation of GBs and subsequently over release of funds is expected to continue.
“It is now expected that Delhi Government will soon send new names. The 5 names were dropped as they were found in contravention to the EC guidelines,” said Rajesh Jha, EC member. From among the Delhi Government nominees who are dropped out of the list by EC, are the names who run private coaching institute, or are employee of private companies having contract with some DU College etc.
Further, in the emergent meeting of EC on Wednesday which went on till Thursday morning, it was also decided to withhold the name of 30 persons, most of them from among the Delhi Government nominees, in wake of 'incomplete' , 'unclear' or 'lack' of information. However, their names have been approved by EC in principle and are only withheld in backdrop of fact that the information was either incomplete or unclear.
“Information like lack of address, affiliation etc. were not mentioned ,” said Jha. According to university sources, Delhi Government will have to send the list of nominees by revising it and after furnishing the full information, only after which the DU will forward it to the concerned colleges. In total 286 members have found place in the list for GB for the GB of 28 Delhi Government funded colleges.
Another EC member AK Bhagi said that there should be no linkage between the formation of GB and release of funds from the Delhi Government as in the absence of non-release of grants it is the student and teacher who ultimately suffer. But academic community is apprehensive that with the DU dropping the names of nominees of Delhi Government in the list for GB will have its own “political overtones”.
