Perturbed by the flak it received for the shocking incident in which a woman gave birth to a baby on a suspension bridge in Tyuni of Dehradun district, a red faced government has ordered an investigation.
The spokesman of Uttarakhand Government and Cabinet Minister, Madan Kaushik said that health department is being asked to conduct an inquiry on the incident. He added that strict action would be initiated against whosoever is found guilty.
The shocking incident occurred on Tuesday when one Vanita Devi wife of Dhanesh a resident of village Ishali in Mori of Uttarakashi district had labour pain. She was taken to a government health centre in Tyuni in Chakrata.
After finding that there is no doctor available in health centre the relatives of the pregnant woman decided to take her to Rohdu in neighboring Himachal Pradesh (HP). To board a vehicle, the woman and her relatives walked across a suspension bridge where the lady started having severe labour pains.
Vanita gave birth to a baby girl with help of local people midway over the suspension bridge. The locals later arranged a vehicle and sent the woman and her family back to their house.
The incident evoked strong reactions from different sections in Uttarakhand. It reflected dismal condition of the health services which in absence of doctors and apathy of successive state governments have become virtually nonexistent.
