Ministry of Home Affairs refused to change cadre of Amitabh Thakur

Tuesday, 28 February 2017 | PNS | Lucknow

Controversial IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, whose request to change his cadre to another other state was earlier turned down, has now claimed that Ministry of Home Affairs despite perceiving threat to his and his wife Nutan Thakur’s life, refused to change his cadre.

Thakur said that the Central Government rejected his prayer to the Home Ministry for changing his cadre after the Mulayam Singh phone threat.

Thakur said that an order dated 20 February 2017 sent by Home Ministry to Chief Secretary, DGP and him said that he and his family members perceive threat to their lives due to activism shown in raising issues related to political corruption, misgovernance, police reforms etc.

He claimed that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) report has been taken on this and the UP Government was directed on December 9, 2016 to provide adequate security to him and his family.

The order said that request for cadre change on grounds of threat to life is not covered under existing guidelines, hence the request was not being accepted.

Thakur had on June 16, 2016 requested Union Home Ministry to change his cadre from UP to any other state alleging ‘harassment and threat to his life’ due to his differences with the ruling Samajwadi Party.

Thakur was suspended on July 13, 2015, days after he had accused Samajwadi Party patron Mulayam Singh Yadav of threatening him over phone. He also made an audio recording public to buttress his claim.

The Centre, in its order dated January 3 last to Chief Secretary of UP, said: “Thakur had requested change of cadre on grounds of threat to his life and his family members. The representation has been examined by Home Ministry and it has not been agreed to.”

The 1992-batch officer had written to the Centre, alleging that the UP government officials were treating him as a ‘sworn enemy’ and claimed that there was threat to him and his wife from influential people.  He was already accorded security cover by the state government on directions of the Union Home Ministry.
