In view of the heavy rainfall experienced in several parts of the State, 10,000 cusecs of water have been released from one of the biggest dams of Chhattisgarh — the ‘Ravishankar Jalashay’ (Gangrel dam) on Saturday.
The Dhamtari district administration and Water Resources Department (WRD) has sounded alert after the release of water from the dam.
The water was released at 3 pm by lifting four gates of the dam. About 1,000 cusecs of water has been released in the irrigation canals, officials informed. The WRD, Revenue and Disaster Management Department has appealed the residents of Dhamtari, Raipur, Mahasamund, Bilaspur, Janjgir-Champa, Raigarh and Gariaband to maintain vigil and avoid crossing culverts and bridges flooded with water.
Officials informed that due to heavy rainfall in the catchment area of the dam, the water level was on the rise.
“On Friday morning, the water level in the dam was 348.12 meters which is 92.85 percent of its total storage capacity,” officials said while adding that the dam has the capacity of 30.41 TMC and about 19,683 cusecs water has been coming into the dam.
They further informed that Gangrel dam’s water is released in the Sondhur River passing from the district. The Sondhur river running through the Dhamtari meets Pairi river near Muhera village of Gariaband district and then the water reaches to Mahanadi via Pairi. likewise, water from Duhawa dam is released directly in Mahanadi river.
