Suo-Motu by NHRC on labourer rape case

Thursday, 30 April 2015 | Pioneer News Service | Lucknow

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo-motu cognizance of a media report that a female labourer, who worked at a brick kiln was picked up by four persons, gang raped and set on fire to destroy evidence in the Chaugama area in Baghpat. The family members were threatened of serious consequences in the event of making any complaint. The report was carried on the 22nd April, 2015 saying that the father of the victim was so terrorised that he kept mum for ten days after the incident till eventually he mustered courage to send a complaint by post to police. The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim woman.  Accordingly, it has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Baghpat, calling for a report in the matter within two weeks so further necessary action could be taken in the incident.
