Taking on crime to take back the streets

Saturday, 06 June 2015 | Alok Singh | New Delhi

In the wake of increased criminal activities in the national Capital, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCPs) of West and South-West districts have been asked to carry out a detailed study of their respective districts and come up with a ‘street crime containment plan’ within 10 days. According to the notification issued from the office of the Joint Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak, the DCPs have been directed to incorporate the strategic

plan for tackling the menace in their districts.

The order, a copy of which is with The Pioneer, reads: “South-West and West districts have been found to be affected by street crimes. Many cases of snatchings, robberies, carjacking etc have taken place. Both the districts have to contain the street crimes. Certain ad-hoc measures have been taken but are not adequate. This menace of street crimes affecting the area needs to be thoroughly studied particularly keeping in view the crime profile of the area, topography, inlets-outlets, crime trends, criminogenic factors etc. Based on the fresh study, an effective comprehensive action plan on ground is required to be executed,” the order states.

It further says: “Both the districts need to carry out the desired study and come up with a ‘street crime containment plan’. Police station crime records, identification of criminals based on crime record and local intelligence, identification of crime-prone vulnerable screeches and points, affective picket checking plan on roads, element of surprise in the picket checking from time and place point of view etc need to be incorporated in the strategic plan added with any other aspects coming out of the district study.”

While criticising the poor implementation of community policing in both the districts, Pathak has also advised to take steps and formulate action plan for community policing.

“It has been observed that the community policing drives/initiatives have taken a backseat in both South-West and West districts. Neither any ongoing schemes have been seen taken forward nor any new initiative has come to notice,” said the statement.

It added that both the district need to come up with a time-bound plan of action on various ongoing drives as well as new initiatives, which need to be submitted by July 1.
