Indian National lok Dal (INlD) chief Om Prakash Chautala was granted bail on Tuesday, by Delhi High Court for three weeks, after signing a personal bond of Rs 5 lakh.
Chautala got the bail to take part in the last rituals of his brother Pratap Singh Chautala who died on June 1 at his native village, Chautala in Sirsa district of Haryana. The cremation took place on June 2.
Chautala along with his son Ajay Chautala and several senior leaders of his party is serving a jail term over corruption charges at the Tihar Jail in New Delhi. N Hariharan, counsel for Chautala pleaded for a bail of six weeks, but the court of Justice Kailash Gambhir granted him bail for three weeks.
It was mentioned in the bail application that being the eldest surviving member of the family, Chautala is required to participate in the social functions which are the part of the right rituals, as per tradition and customs prevalent in the community.
Earlier Chautala had attended the cremation of his younger brother at village after getting permission from the jail authorities on June 2, after which he returned back to jail.
