The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has added another feather in its cap with two doctors working at the civic body’s Charak Palika Hospital clearing the UPSC exams. Not just that, one of them, Bharti Dixit, is the topper among the girls in all India besides standing fifth in the toppers’ list.
At a time when for the first time in four years, a male (Gaurav Agrawal) topped the prestigious examinations, a 26-year-old female doctor (Dixit) is the only female candidate to acquire a place for herself in the top five all India ranks of UPSC Civil Services Exam 2013. Speaking to The Pioneer, Dixit who cracked the exam in her first attempt said, “I was confident that I would pass with a good rank, but did not expect to top among all girls and be in the top 5 as I knew that it was the dedication that matters.”
An MBBS graduate from lady Hardinge Medical College of Delhi, she worked as a medical officer with NDMC’s Charak Palika hospital in Moti Bagh and was recently working at the NDMC’s Mandir Marg dispensary after she cleared her UPSC combined medical services exam. “Working as a doctor helped me to enhance my knowledge and I would read from Government websites and newspapers and use them as study material,” she said. However, she also admitted that because she was working as a doctor, she could devote only four to six hours to her preparations. She hoped to apply her knowledge of medicine to addressing the needs of the health sector. As a hobby Bharti has a keen interest in astronomy and enjoys reading about the outer space.
Another doctor in the civic body’s hospital, Prashant Jilova also cleared the UPSC examinations. Working at Charak Palika since the past six months, Jilova got 1075 rank in the civil services examination. When asked about his reaction to the results, he said, “The feeling is just fine, but not overwhelming. I expected a better rank.” It being his first attempt, he plans to give the examinations another try. “I will definitely give the second attempt. But will do it simultaneously by working in whatever post I get. I think I should be getting into Revenue Services,” said Jilova.
“It is indeed a moment of pride for us that two doctors from our hospital have cleared the UPSC. With Bharti ranking fifth in all India and topping among the girls, we are very happy and will felicitate them. The two doctors have done their duty with full sincerity and never neglected their work under the pretext of studies. We hope to encourage others similarly,” said a senior NDMC official.
