Pooja joins BJP, may contest lS polls

Tuesday, 17 December 2013 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

It may not sound music to Congress ears, but popular Punjabi singer Miss Pooja will soon croon the political song.

After picking up the microphone for singing peppy numbers, she may soon find herself using the mike for addressing political rallies after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday.

Originally Gurinder Kaur Kainth and nicknamed as Pooja, the newbie in politics, is considered as a frontrunner for the party’s ticket from Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency for the 2014 polls.

Even as Miss Pooja categorically refused eyeing the Hoshiarpur seat, the possibility of the saffron brigade fielding her against the sitting Congress MP and Union Minister Santosh Chowdhary could not be ruled out.

“I have no intentions of contesting elections… but if the party decides that I should contest, I have no issues with that. But, I have joined politics without any conditions,” said Miss Pooja, after joining the BJP on Monday at BJP’s headquarters in Chandigarh.

In fact, the political pandits are interpreting Miss Pooja’s induction in the party as a double-edged weapon.

On one hand, the party is aiming at attracting the Dalit voters as Miss Pooja hails from the community, on the other, the party would also be benefited with Miss Pooja’s matrimonial tie in the lubana community — having considerable presence in the constituency.

Hailing from Rajpura town of Patiala, she has been married in Doaba region.

“The party is having a bit tough time to find a suitable candidate for the Hoshiarpur seat though sitting MlA and party’s candidate in 2009 elections Som Parkash is an option the party is looking at. But, it is in favour of having a young face that would also give a tough fight to the Congress probable candidate Santosh Chowdhary,” a senior BJP leader told The Pioneer.

In 2009 parliamentary polls, BJP’s Som Prakash, currently the chief parliamentary secretary in the Punjab Government, was ranked third with 3,58,446 votes in his kitty. Earlier, Avinash Rai Khanna had won the seat in 2004 elections.

“Considering that the seat is affected by anti-incumbency factor, with the voters electing Congress and BJP candidate alternatively, the BJP is looking for a strong candidate,” the leader added.

Awed with the development-related thinking and policies of NDA’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Miss Pooja has decided to perform on the political stage.

“Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s policies and vision have inspired me and for that, I have decided to work for the party and the people as a party worker. I have not asked for any post or anything… I have joined unconditionally,” she said.

Besides Modi, Miss Pooja was all praise for the work being done by the Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, especially in the field of female foeticide under Nanhi Chhan project. “She has work for the upliftment of the women and children, and I would also work in that direction,” she added.

She said: “After coming into the BJP, my main priority would be to work for the women and children…I have sung many songs on the issue of female foeticide, and will continue that.” Ruling over the Punjabi music scene since past decade, Miss Pooja has recorded more than 3000 songs with nothing less than 300 music albums to her credit. With the revival of Punjabi cinema, Miss Pooja has also acted in five Punjabi films.
