Polls for 12 UT gram panchayats on Dec 15

Elections for 12 gram panchayats in Chandigarh will be held on December 15 and the Model Code of Conduct came into force in the rural areas on Friday.

The term of all the present 12 panchayats will expire in January. The State Election Commission, Chandigarh in consultation with the UT Administrator Shivraj Patil has decided to hold the next general election to all the 12 gram panchayats on December 15, said a spokesperson of the UT Administration.

The spokesperson said that the Model Code of Conduct has come into force in the rural area of Union Territory of Chandigarh and will remain in effect till the declaration of result of the polls. Election advertisements on TV channels and for cable operators to be given by candidates etc will be regulated by the area Sub-Divisional Magistrate for granting prior permission.

The elections to gram panchayats will be held in villages namely Kishangarh, Mauli Jagran, Daria, Raipur Kalan & Makhanmajra, Raipur Khurd, Sarangpur, Dhanas, Khuda Alisher, Kaimbwala, lahora, Khuda Jassu and Behlana.

The elections will be held on 132 seats, including 73 seats for general, 38 reserved for women, 14 for SCs and seven for SC women The gram panchayats where the post of Sarpanch (village head) is reserved are Kishangarh, Kaimbwala, Behlana, Raipur Kalan, Makhanmajra and Khuda Jassu.

The process of filing of nominations for election will commence from November 29, last date for filing nomination is December 4, scrutiny of nominations will be done on December 5, last date for withdrawal of candidatures is Dec 7, date of polling is Dec 15, date of counting is Dec 17 and the election process would be completed by Jan 6, 2014.

The maximum limit of election expenditure which a candidate for election to Sarpanch or Panch can incur in connection with general election of gram panchayat is `30,000, said the UT spokesperson.
