New Appointment of DGP still undecided

Tuesday, 31 December 2013 | PNS | Lucknow

With the present DGP, Deoraj Nagar retires on Tuesday, the uncertainty over appointing new DGP is still wrapped in mystery.

In the race, four senior officers, Arun Kumar Gupta, Al Banerjee, Ranjan Dwivedi and Rizwan Ahmad are the prominent contenders. Sources disclosed that the delay in deciding the new incumbent for the post, to fall vacant on Tuesday, is the parliamentary election. “In all probability it seemed that the notification for the election will be announced in the last week of February 2014 and there are fair enough chances that one who wear the crown be shifted by then. In the light of these facts, Rizwan Ahmad seemed to be a strong contender as by appointing him as new DGP, the Samajwadi Party run government will ably leave a feel-good message among Muslims community and also this may assuage some of the disgruntled one,” the sources claimed. They said if the possibility turned into reality, this will be probably first time in the history of UP that chief secretary and DGP both will be Muslim.

They said if the Election Commission asked the government to shift the then DGP, the government will sent the names of the remaining three contenders to the commission and in that case the new incumbent DGP will be of their choice again though indirectly.

The sources further said another contender Al Banerjee is said to have strong political equation with the powerful politicians and in the light of these facts his incarnation is strongly claimed to doing work. “The other contender Ranjan Dwivedi is looked as most upright officer and by his elevation to the post, the government will ably leave a good impression on people who are being attracted grudgingly by the political parties advocating the urgent need of fair and honest politics in the country. Based on the seniority list, Arun Kumar Gupta is one among the strong contenders for the post of DGP and he in equal probability is likely to be given the mantle by the state government,” the sources said.

Meanwhile, a valedictory function will be organised at Reserve Police lines (RPl) on the occasion of retirement of DGP, Nagar on Tuesday.
