Prominent freedom fighter and former Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Harbans lal (95) died on Friday at the PGIMER, Chandigarh. He remained the Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 1964 to 1967. He was also a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court from 1975-1980 and was in active practice as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court for over two decades.
Harbans lal was a Minister of State in Pratap Singh Kairon’s Cabinet in the late 1950s. He was one of the founding leaders of the Praja Mandal Movement in undivided Punjab before Independence and was detained by the British during the Quit India Movement. Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda has expressed grief over the demise of Harbans lal.
