In its bid to sharpen attack on the SP government in UP and Congress-led UPA at the Centre, the state BJP has decided to pitchfork newly-appointed national general secretary Varun Gandhi at the forefront. The saffron-clad Gandhi will lead an agitation in lucknow on May 4 against rampant corruption and all-round faliure of the UP and Central governments.
This was stated by state BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak on Monday. He said that the Congress-led UPA had become synonymous with corruption and by supporting it both the SP and the BSP had become responsible for the tarvails of the people. "These two parties blame the Congress outside, but at the time of crisis inside Parliament, both chose to rescue it," he said.
However, the decision to organise a stir led by Varun Gandhi is viewed as an indicator that Varun is set to play the role of a star campaigner in the days to come and in the BJP's run-up to the lok Sabha polls.
Varun was the national secretary of the party while Nitin Gadkari was the national chief. He was later promoted as national general secretary by the present chief Rajnath Singh.
The BJP MP from Pilibhit has been also assigned to hold a couple of rallies in the days to come and the first of these rallies will be held at Bareilly on May 1 to be attended by national chief Rajnath Singh. Varun will also attend a rally
on May 16 at Sultanpur amidst speculation that he might contest the coming lok Sabha polls from Sultanpur bordering Amethi which is represented by his elder cousin and AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
