Activists attending a seminar on the questions raised by the recent disaster in Uttarakhand and the solution to the problems, said that the relief and rehabilitation measures taken by the State Government are not adequate.
Those attending the seminar criticised the State government for is insensitivity and carelessness in the relief, reconstruction and rehabilitation measures being undertaken in the disaster affected areas of the State. They sought immediate measures to efficiently complete the relief and rehabilitation works in the affected areas before the onset of the winter season. Speakers also elicited focus on the need for providing unemployment allowance to the people rendered without employment due to the damage wreaked by the disaster in June.
They said that on June 14 the government had received warning about the probability of heavy rains from the meteorological department and the agriculture advisory bulletin but the State government did not take this warning seriously. Following the disaster on June 16-17 the State government initiated rescue and relief measures on June 21, said the activists attending the seminar. They said that the damage caused by nature was exacerbated by inefficiency of the State government and the large hydro power projects constructed indiscriminately in the State. Trepan Singh Chauhan, Atul Sharma and others also expressed their views on the occasion.
