S Delhi first to be made multi-modal transit hub

leading the change in the commuting scenario, south Delhi will be the first to become the multi-modal transit hub of the national Capital. The seven kilometre area between Chhatarpur metro station and Arjan Garh will be developed to facilitate seamless integration between the different modes of public transport, including buses and autorickshaws, with the Delhi metro.

The identified areas will be developed to provide drop-off facilities, parking areas for feeder, para-transit modes and suitable environment with facilities for pedestrians thereby solving the issue of perpetual traffic mess around metro stations.

The public transport users in Delhi have to face major hassles daily, while shifting from one mode of transport to another. This inadvertently triggers traffic chaos around metro stations, leading to slow traffic movement. Gauging the problem, Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) during its 38th governing body meeting had come up with a proposal to develop all the 64 upcoming metro stations in Phase III as multi-modal transit hubs. For the pilot study to integrate metro with the other transport options, Delhi Metro was asked to take up Chhatarpur metro station.

As part of the project, the 1,500 metre catchment area including Chhatarpur, Sultanpur, Ghitorni and Arjan Garh metro stations will be developed to provide first mile and last mile connectivity to the commuters. According to senior officials, the idea is to make public transport the preferred mode of transport for maximum number of people by making it easily accessible, efficient, reliable and safe. “Numerous meetings have been conducted to deliberate on the proposal and tailor it according to commuter needs, for which various agencies including Delhi Traffic Police and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) have been roped in. The interchange zones will provide pedestrian walkways, space for the movement of cycle rickshaws, drop-in and drop-off points for autorickshaws and bus bays,” said a senior official.

As per the minutes of the meeting, it was decided that Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will implement the proposal of multi-modal integration plan and connectivity by engaging a consultant for the upcoming 64 metro stations. During the meeting, it was mutually agreed upon that DDA would implement the multi-modal integration project. It was also decided during the meeting, presided over by the lieutenant Governor, that necessary funding for the detailed design and construction will be provided by DDA for the speedy implementation of project.
