Punjab Introduces Sign Language in Legislative Assembly — a First in India

Chandigarh: Punjab has made history by becoming the first state in India to implement sign language in its Legislative Assembly, ensuring inclusivity for persons with disabilities (PwDs). Social Security Minister Dr Baljit Kaur on Wednesday announced that key sessions, including the Governor’s Address and Budget discussions, will now be broadcast in sign language. This initiative, aligned with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, aims to make legislative proceedings accessible to all.

 

Punjab Women Commission to Hold Lok Adalat in Ludhiana

Chandigarh: Punjab State Women Commission, led by chairperson Raj Lali Gill and Special DGP Gurpreet Kaur Deo, will organize a Lok Adalat on March 20 in Ludhiana to address women’s grievances. The event aims to provide on-the-spot resolution of complaints, ensuring justice and protection of women’s rights. Police officials and department officers will be present to facilitate swift redressal, offering a platform for women to voice their concerns effectively. 

 

SC/ST Act Invoked After Punjab SC panel’s Intervention

Chandigarh: Following the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission’s intervention, Amritsar Police added SC/ST Act sections to a case involving the assault of a CRPF constable by Punjab Police personnel. SC panel chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi on Wednesday ensured the inclusion of these sections after a complaint highlighted casteist abuse and unjustified violence. The Commission also secured assurances that the cross-case against the victim would be withdrawn, emphasizing justice for marginalized communities.

 

Lakhewali Grain Market Expansion to Boost Farmers’ Trade

Chandigarh: Thanks to the efforts of Social Security Minister Dr Baljit Kaur, the Lakhewali grain market will be expanded to benefit farmers from six nearby villages. The Gram Panchayat donated five kanals of land for the project, approved under Punjab Village Common Lands Rules. Dr Baljit highlighted that the expanded market will enhance trade facilities, benefiting farmers, commission agents, and traders while strengthening the agricultural economy. 

 

HP CM Mourns Demise of Additional AG Dilip Sharma

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Additional Advocate General Dilip Sharma, who passed away at 49 after a brief illness. Sharma, a promising advocate, served the state for two years. The CM extended condolences to the bereaved family, and Sharma was cremated with state honours in Shimla, attended by judges, senior advocates, and government officials.  

 

Central University of Punjab Opens Admissions for 2025-26

Bathinda: The Central University of Punjab has announced admissions for five UG programmes for 2025-26 through CUET (UG) 2025 and NCET-2025. Programmes include BA-BEd, BSc-BEd, B Pharmacy, BTech, and BA-LLB, approved by respective regulatory bodies. Vice-Chancellor Prof Raghavendra P Tiwari on Wednesday urged students to join NAAC A+ accredited university, known for its academic excellence and holistic development. 

 

Punjab Transfers 4 IAS Officers, including Ludhiana, Ropar DCs

Chandigarh: Punjab Government on Wednesday transferred four IAS officers, including Ludhiana DC Jitender Jorwal, following AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal’s visit to the city. Himanshu Jain, Rupnagar DC, will replace Jorwal, while Varjeet Walia takes charge in Rupnagar.

Punjab VB Arrests ASI for Accepting Bribe

Chandigarh: Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested ASI Sarabjeet Singh for accepting Rs 3,000 bribe to release a confiscated vehicle. The arrest followed a complaint filed on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered, and the accused will be produced in court, reflecting the state’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption. 

 

INNO-TECH 2025 Showcases Engineering Innovations

Kapurthala: Pushpa Gujral Science City and IK Gujral Punjab Technical University hosted INNO-TECH 2025, featuring cutting-edge projects by over 400 students. Winners included teams from Chandigarh Engineering College and GNA University for innovations like “Solar Power Trash Collector” and “Robotic Hand”. The event highlighted the role of technology in addressing societal challenges and driving economic growth. 

 

Dr Ambedkar IHM Celebrates 35th Annual Day

Chandigarh: Dr Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management celebrated its 35th Annual Day with the theme “Panchtatva – Five Elements of the Absolute Truth”. The event featured cultural performances, the release of the annual magazine “Gourmet’s Affair”, and awards for outstanding students. Principal Arvind Varma praised the institute’s achievements and the dedication of its faculty and students.
