Yamuna revival key to Capital’s environmental future: LG Sandhu

Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Taranjit Singh Sandhu said on Saturday that the Yamuna is an ecological lifeline, and restoring the river is closely linked to Delhi’s environmental future.
Developing biodiversity zones and eco-restoration efforts across the Yamuna floodplains are particularly significant in this regard, he said at the 5th International Summit & Expo on Bioenergy Value Chain BBB 2026.
“From reviving the Yamuna River to expanding green cover across the capital, our focus remains on transforming sustainability into a collective, citizen-led movement,” he said in a post on X.
As the national capital, Delhi faces many environmental and urban challenges confronting modern cities globally, such as air pollution, urban heat stress, waste management, mobility pressures, and ecological sustainability, he said.
Urban horticulture, tree-cover expansion, shade infrastructure, and Miyawaki-style dense plantations are important interventions for addressing heat stress, improving air quality, and strengthening urban resilience, he said.
Delhi has the opportunity to become a model for urban environmental transformation. A greener Delhi must become central to both quality of life and climate resilience, Sandhu stated, emphasising citizen participation.
Resident Welfare Associations, adopting parks, school-level plantation drives, community participation in green initiatives, and greater public ownership of environmental spaces can create a more sustainable and urban culture, he suggested.
Sandhu said under the “visionary” leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bharat has emerged as a leading global voice on renewable energy and climate responsibility. Guided by the PM’s conviction, the country is steadily transitioning towards a net-zero future through decisive action and international collaborations such as the International Solar Alliance, he said.
“The future global economy, will increasingly reward, countries that are able to align, sustainability with competitive-ness India has the scale, talent, entrepreneur capacity, and policy momentum, to emerge as a major global hub,” he added.
