Wangchuk receives rousing welcome in Leh

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was accorded a grand welcome on his first visit to Leh on Sunday, after the Centre revoked his detention under the National Security Act and released him from the Jodhpur jail after 170 days on March 14.
Accompanied by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, Wangchuk, dressed in his traditional attire, was warmly received by supporters of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) who garlanded him en route to the venue of the public rally.
Addressing the gathering, Wangchuk said he felt positive about returning to the mountains after nearly six months. “I am feeling very good. After 170 days, coming to these mountains and meeting people, I hope that a new sun will rise for the cause for which we are working.
We are moving forward with hope and I would like to thank the people of the entire country who supported us in this struggle.”
He acknowledged that several mistakes were made from a justice perspective but said he holds no bitterness and wishes to move forward through dialogue.
Describing his time in jail as difficult, Sonam Wangchuk said the period in custody gave him an opportunity for self-reflection. He added that his wife, Gitanjali, faced significant challenges while handling the legal battle during this time.
