Verma lays foundation stone for new flood control monitoring centre

Delhi’s Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma on Monday laid the foundation stone for a new flood control monitoring centre at the L.M. Bund Office Complex in Shastri Nagar. The centre aims to strengthen the capital’s preparedness for the monsoon season.
The proposed facility will function as a central monitoring hub for flood management operations in the city. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 355.72 lakh, is expected to be completed by June 15, 2026, ahead of the peak monsoon period.
Senior officials and engineers of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department were present during the foundation-laying ceremony.
Officials stated that the new building will significantly enhance the department’s ability to monitor river water levels, coordinate field operations, and respond promptly to emergency situations during the flood season.
According to the department, the ground floor of the facility will house the main flood control room. This room will be used to monitor water levels in rivers and drains across the city, review reports from field teams, and coordinate responses in case of rising water levels or flooding threats.
The first floor of the building will include a conference and coordination hall designed to accommodate around 50 people.
The space will be used for review meetings, planning sessions, and operational briefings during emergency situations when officials and engineers need to make quick decisions.
Speaking after laying the foundation stone, Verma said the Delhi government is working to strengthen institutional infrastructure so that departments can function more efficiently during critical situations.
“Every monsoon, our engineers and field teams work round the clock to monitor river levels, drainage systems, and vulnerable locations across Delhi. Facilities like this monitoring centre will make coordination smoother and help officials make decisions faster when required,” he said.
