VCK says decision on supporting Vijay-led TVK government will be taken soon

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan said his party has received a formal request from Vijay’s Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) seeking support to form the government in Tamil Nadu, and a final decision will be taken soon by the party’s high-level committee.
The TVK emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly elections after winning 108 seats in the 234-member House, but it still remains short of the majority mark of 118.
Though the Congress, which secured five seats, has extended support to the Vijay-led party, the TVK continues to seek backing from additional parties to stake claim to form the government.
“We received the request letter from TVK. We are thankful for that. We have not ignored Vijay’s request. We have a procedure. Our party’s high-level committee will discuss the merits and demerits before taking a decision,” Thirumavalavan told reporters in Chennai.
The VCK chief also urged Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to invite Vijay to form the government, stating that the TVK, as the single largest party, has a constitutional right to be given the opportunity.
Questioning the delay in inviting the TVK, Thirumavalavan said the governor should not insist on proof of support from 118 MLAs before government formation, adding that the majority should instead be tested on the floor of the Assembly after swearing-in.
Meanwhile, Vijay is also expected to vacate one of the two constituencies he won in the Assembly elections.
Political uncertainty continues in Tamil Nadu as parties explore possible alliances and support arrangements following the fractured verdict.
