Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and the brilliance of youth

The question worth asking IS if the promise Sooryavanshi has shown as a 14-15-year-old putting him on the same track as some of the greatest of all time?
Across the world of sports, there have been several prodigies who have taken the stage by storm upon their arrival that it feels almost unreal. From the time Rajasthan Royals picked him during the Indian Premier League mega auction in November 2024, when he was still 13 for Rs 1.1 crore, there was wide interest in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. When Sooryavanshi first debuted in the 2025 season, it didn’t go unnoticed, among his various exploits was a century against one of the league’s best bowling attacks in Gujarat Titans. However, it is his performance in 2026 which proves he is no one-tournament wonder and can be there for the long haul. 583 runs in 14 games in the league phase, at an incredible strike rate of 232 with 53 sixes, only six short of the IPL all-time record.
It is not that Sooryavanshi has made these runs against any other bowler. Genuine world-class bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Kagiso Rabada have been treated with disdain, with Sooryavanshi exuding a confidence unusual for someone who is just 15. What stands out about Sooryavanshi is that this isn’t about 2-3 games but a consistency that has been shown through the season. Is the question worth asking if the promise Sooryavanshi has shown as a 14-15-year-old putting him on the same track as some of the greatest of all-time?
Sooryavanshi showing that he is no greenhorn against the highest quality of bowlers brings back the story of the great Sir Don Bradman. Indian audiences would be familiar with the Australian mini-series Bodyline, which used to be occasionally broadcast in the 1990s. Based on information which is also publicly available, Bradman as a young boy was shown competing and even doing better than opponents much older than him. Bradman was so good in the initial stages of his career, that the English team specifically designed the Bodyline strategy in the 1932-33 Ashes of a packed leg-side field and intimidating short-pitched bowling to curb his superiority, even though the target was the whole Australian team.
In our own country, how can we forget Sachin Tendulkar. Debuting at 16 in 1989, Tendulkar faced the fearsome Pakistan quicks like Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. By 18, he was scoring centuries on Australia’s fast bouncy pitches, including a brilliant hundred at Perth, widely known as the world’s fastest pitch. Tendulkar’s exceptional international career that lasted 24 years is a benchmark for early promise translating into sustained excellence.
At his age, Sooryavanshi is one of the finest talents to have ever emerged. The bright lights, constant spotlight and scrutiny, and facing top-class international bowlers in the IPL is no easy proving ground. Yet Sooryavanshi has shown not just competence and dominance, but also seems relatively unflustered while taking them on. There is, though a lot more that needs to be done for Sooryavanshi to translate this initial burst into a successful career. Red ball cricket remains a tougher challenge for all cricketers. Sooryavanshi’s numbers in first-class cricket don’t match up to his exceptional T20 numbers, an average of 17 in 8 matches.
Sporting history reminds us that prodigious talent is a global phenomenon. Pele was 17 when he scored six goals to help Brazil win its first World Cup in 1958. Monica Seles dominated tennis as a teenager, winning eight Grand Slam titles by 19, till her tragic stabbing in April 1993 brought a halt to her winning momentum. These are two examples when age did not prove to be a bar when it comes to reaching the pinnacle of sporting excellence.
The older and more experienced Sooryavanshi gets, the smarter he will need to become because teams will undoubtedly come up with plans to contain him. Playing in different countries, surfaces and formats as and when he graduates towards becoming an international cricketer will test Sooryavanshi. Even within the IPL, he will need to possess a level head as the lucre of money will grow as early as the 2028 season after the next mega auction. He will be one of the most sought-after players and whether his current franchise retains him or he goes into the mega auction, a big payday is expected.
At 15, Sooryavanshi is already extraordinary. While predicting the arc of his career would be premature, the early signs are nothing short of electrifying. Fans, selectors, and cricketing purists can watch in anticipation as a young talent navigates the beginning of what could be a very successful journey.
Sooryavanshi’s talent is extraordinary but sustaining it will be the challenge. That’s what distinguished Bradman and Tendulkar from many others who showcased remarkable potential when young. At 15, there is plenty of time for Sooryavanshi to get better, whether it is improving his first-class numbers or reaching the national team.
