Uttarakhand cop face action over fake resignation at CJP protest
Uttarakhand Police have initiated legal and departmental action against a suspended constable after he allegedly made “inflammatory and irresponsible” remarks and claimed to have resigned from the force while addressing protesters at the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) agitation at Jantar Mantar, officials said on Friday.
Videos circulating on social media showed Constable Sher Singh taking the stage during the protest, launching a sharp attack on the Government and the recruitment system, and declaring that he had left the Uttarakhand Police to join the movement. At the end of his speech, he removed the Uttarakhand Police badge from his shoulder and handed it over to CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, drawing cheers and slogans from the gathering.
Quoting freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, Sher Singh told the crowd, “Life is lived on one’s own strength. Revolution comes from ideas. If fighting for one’s rights is rebellion, then we are rebels.”
He also alleged irregularities in Uttarakhand recruitment, claiming that Patwari examination papers were “available at grocery stores”, a statement that sparked discussion among protesters. However, Uttarakhand Police disputed Sher Singh’s claims, stating he had not resigned from service and remained posted in Pithoragarh district. Kumaon Range Inspector General of Police Nivedita Kukreti said Singh had already been suspended on July 20 for prolonged unauthorised absence from duty and for failing to respond to a notice issued by the district Superintendent of Police.
Kukreti further said the constable has a criminal case against him and was earlier sent to Haridwar Jail in connection with an alleged land encroachment case involving gangster Praveen Valmiki. He is currently out on bail, she said. According to the officer, dismissal proceedings against Sher Singh were already underway in connection with that case before his appearance at the Jantar Mantar protest.
Meanwhile, Delhi authorities also issued clarifications after separate videos surfaced online showing another individual claiming to have resigned from the Delhi Police in support of the CJP protest.
The Directorate General of Home Guards identified the individual as Ravi Kumar, who was serving as a volunteer with the Delhi Home Guards and not with the Delhi Police. The directorate said he had been discharged from the Home Guards with immediate effect for misconduct and clarified that his statements were made in his personal capacity.
Delhi Police also rejected another viral claim by a man identifying himself as a Delhi Police sub-inspector who had allegedly resigned to join the protest. In a statement, the force said no such officer existed in its records and described the video as “false and misleading”, adding that legal action would be taken against those responsible for creating and circulating such misinformation.
