Privilege motion against TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh

There was more problem for senior pro-Mamata Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh with Bengal Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shankar Ghosh on Friday moving a breach of privilege motion against him for disrespecting the Speaker and decorum of the House.

The development comes close on the heels of the TMC leader being marshaled out the House for two successive days after he got embroiled in serious altercation with Speaker Rathindranath Bose and Akrujjaman and the ‘official’ Chief Whip of the (breakaway section of) TMC.

“There is a conspiracy being hatched to suspend me permanently or even take away my membership of the House through the backdoor… after they failed to defeat me in the elections… I don’t care being robbed off my membership… but as an honest soldier of Mamata Banerjee I will continue to raise my voice as and when required,” Ghosh said, though inside the House he apologised to both the Speaker and the TMC Chief Whip saying, “If any of my actions appeared disrespectful, I express my regret.” The Speaker had presently kept the issue with himself for consideration.

“The matter is currently under my consideration, and I will deliver my decision in due course,” he said.

The altercation started when Ghosh protested against Akrujjaman’s decision to remove his name from the list of speakers. Akrujjaman is presently the official Chief Whip nominated by the larger faction of a 62-member strong breakaway faction of the TMC.

Sobhandeb Chatterjee the leader of Mamata Banerjee section, which has about 18 MLAs with them, had nominated Kunal Ghosh deliver his speech for the TMC.

Kunal told the Speaker while putting across his plea, “since the other side has been designated as the ‘Opposition,’ we are being denied the opportunity to speak… this is injustice and should be addressed.”
