Two die of suffocation during Mexico's World Cup victory celebrations

Celebrations following Mexico's historic FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 victory over Ecuador turned tragic after two people died of suffocation in Mexico City.
According to the city's Health Secretariat, the deaths occurred as thousands of fans poured onto the streets to celebrate Mexico's first World Cup knockout-stage win since 1986. Authorities said the victims were caught in overcrowded gatherings during the post-match festivities.
Mexico secured a memorable 2-0 win over Ecuador at the Estadio Azteca, with goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez sealing the hosts' place in the Round of 16.
The victory sparked jubilant scenes across the country, with fans filling public squares and streets late into the night. However, the celebrations were overshadowed by the tragic loss of life.
Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The tragedy has prompted renewed concerns over crowd management and public safety during large-scale sporting celebrations as Mexico continues its World Cup campaign.
